Introducing ‘Reentrant’: the band and the tuning concept

Posted on January 01, 2010 by admin

I’ve often seen the word, ‘reentrant’ or ‘re-entrant’ in regard to standard ukulele tuning (GCEA) but didn’t understand what the term meant.   I know now!

I was reading (and enjoying!) the 2nd issue of TriCornPublications ‘Ukulele Player’ magazine and there was an article about the two man ukulele playing band, ‘The Re-entrants’.   They have been called the ‘hottest cover band in England’.  The article was great and the two gentleman, Phil and Ian, seem like a likable pair.  Visit their Website, their MySpace page, their Facebook page to learn more about them.  To enjoy their great performances check out their YouTube channel!

I love ‘The Re-entrants’ version of ‘Tainted Love’…

NOW, to the meaning of the word ‘re-entrant’ or ‘reentrant’.    The band’s Website directeted me to a Wikipedia article on ‘reentrant tuning’.   To qoute:

‘a tuning of a stringed instrument where the strings (or more properly the courses on coursed instruments) are not ordered from the lowest pitch to the highest pitch (or vice versa). A break in an otherwise ascending (or descending) order of string pitches is known as a reentry.’

The ‘G’ string is pitched between or reenters the third and fourth strings (E & A).
